Maritime SecurityAll Tasmanian ports operate under the Maritime Transport and Offshore Facilities Security Act 2003 which came into effect on 1 July 2004. The Act establishes a regulatory framework that safeguards maritime transport and assists in protecting the public in the case of a potential incident in the Port area. In particular, the Act is aimed at protecting ships, ports and port facilities within Australia.
Where Waterside Restricted Zones are in place, access to the zones is restricted to authorised persons only. Unauthorised access within a zone established for any ship at berth within the port is prohibited and is an offence under the Maritime Transport and Offshore Facilities Security Act 2003. Penalties may be imposed including fines in excess of $5000.00. Waterside Restricted Zones will be established for vessels such as cruise vessels, ocean going ferries (TT line vessels) and bulk fuel carriers when these vessels are visiting Tasports’ port facilities. Waterside Restricted Zones as defined above extend to all port facilities within the security regulated ports operated by Tasports as identified by the Waterside Restricted Zone maps below. Waterside Restricted Zones will be established by Tasports from time to time to protect visiting ships and minimise the risk to the port, its services and infrastructure from direct acts of terrorism, sabotage, civil unrest and acts of vandalism.
