The biennial conference is focused on building resilient pilotage and will also discuss global and national emerging issues for marine pilots.

Tasmanian Harbour Master Mick Wall said the 130 delegates were visiting the state from other Australian states and New Zealand.

“Delegates are here representing marine pilots, regulators, policy makers, port operators and industry leaders,” he said.

“Topics to be covered include stress, fatigue and mental health, emergency responses, pilot equipment, safety investigations, changes in pilot training standards and comparative best practice.

“These issues are extremely important for marine pilots and the safety of the marine sector more broadly.”

Business Events Tasmania CEO Marnie Craig said hosting the conference in Tasmania offered opportunities to showcase local expertise and knowledge to a national and international audience.

“It provides the space for talent acquisition, future collaboration opportunities and important knowledge transfer,” she said.

“In addition, the direct expenditure this and other conferences like it bring to the state is an important economic contributor.”

TasPorts and the Australian Maritime College are the joint major sponsors of the conference.
