Devonport West’s Berth 3 decommissioned wharf and Port Operations Building will be demolished later this month after being deemed structurally unsound.

The Port Operations building was constructed in 1958 and was occupied by the Marine Board of Devonport before the amalgamation of the port companies and the creation of TasPorts in 2006.

More recently, the building has been a hub for TasPorts’ marine teams with easy access to the port’s tugs and pilot vessel.

TasPorts Acting Chief Executive Officer Anthony Donald said the impact to port users from the works would be minimal, however, the demolition of the building would obviously be noticed because of its location and profile.

“The Port Operations Building has been unoccupied since April last year, however it is a high profile building on Devonport West’s port landscape,” he said.

Mr Donald said the removal of the unused building and decommissioned wharf would improve the safety of the port environment for port users and would also improve the view from Formby Road.

The demolition works will be undertaken by Hazell Bros.
