Burnie Berth 4 Remediation Works

Essential wharf remediation works are underway at Berth 4 in the Port of Burnie supporting Tasmania’s leading freight gateway.

The 16-month program of works, will remediate, strengthen and future proof this critical asset against scour and erosion for decades to come. These works are necessary to ensure the long-term resilience and efficiency of port operations.

TasPorts continues to work closely with Strait Link, and all port customers, to ensure the project results in limited impact to freight movements with all works delivered around shipping schedules.

Works will be delivered from April 2026 with practical completion expected for mid-June 2027.

JULY 2026 WORKS UPDATE

Port infrastructure works are underway at Berth 4 off Port Road. Delivered around shipping schedules to limit impacts to port operations.

Works will include installing concrete piles into the seabed to strengthen the wharf and protect it from erosion and seawater damage which is common in a saltwater environment.

Concrete piling works will be delivered between Monday 13 July - Tuesday 25 August (dates subject to project scheduling changes).

Why are we delivering works at Berth 4?

TasPorts is delivering essential wharf remediation works to incrementally strengthen the ageing wharf structure. These works are necessary to ensure the long-term resilience and efficiency of port operations.

What will the works involve?

Three remediation techniques will be used, including:

Ground improvement works behind the concrete wharf to further strengthen the entire quay wall and wharf structure at Berth 4.
Scour protection of wharf infrastructure to be installed below the water surface and at the toe of the quay wall.
Installation of high-capacity grouted steel micro-piles through the existing wharf structure.

What are the piling works occurring in July and August?

Concrete piling will be delivered from 13 July until 25 August 2026. These works will include installing concrete piles into the seabed to strengthen the wharf and protect it from erosion and seawater damage which is common in saltwater environments.
These works will strengthen the wharf and are necessary to ensure the long-term resilience and efficiency of port operations.

Will piling works create noise?

Piling works may generate noise in the area. We are committed to reducing the impact on the local community while we deliver these essential works. Noise reduction measures including sound dampening systems, acoustic barriers/curtains and use of alternative piling methods.

Who is delivering the design and construction works?

TasPorts has awarded a local construction company BridgePro Engineering, alongside specialist sub-contractor Wagstaff, a contract to deliver a 16-month program of remediation works at Berth 4.

How long will the infrastructure works take?

The remediation works will be delivered across a 16-month program from April 2026.

When will the project be completed?

The project is on track for practical completion in June 2027.
