This week’s departure from the Port of Devonport of the heavy lift ship, AAL Melbourne, with the salvaged York Cove and Campbell Cove wrecks on board marks the end of the successful salvage exercise for TasPorts, its insurers and the salvage company.

The insurers and the salvors, both of which have independent international experience in this work, say it was one of the most complex salvage activities they have ever undertaken.

From day one TasPorts was focused on removing the wrecks and returning all commercial berths at the Port of Devonport to full operations, while at the same time carefully managing environmental and safety risks

The incident site is now undergoing marine safety inspection and assessment to ascertain potential damage to the wharf. That work includes a detailed hydrographic survey and an underwater scan of the wharf structure, and a structural report will then be produced. This work is a necessary part of the process of returning the port to full service.

We thank our customers and stakeholders for the patience shown over the course of this unprecedented incident.
